The Titusville Area School District will be participating in the Communities That Care: Pennsylvania Youth Survey. This survey is designed to assess specific characteristics of the school and community environments that may be associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. These characteristics are called risk factors and protective factors.
Risk factors are characteristics that are known to increase the likelihood that a student will engage in one or more problem behaviors. For example, in communities or families where there is acceptance or tolerance of drug use, students are more likely to engage in ATOD use. Protective factors are characteristics in the student's community, families and school that are known to decrease the likelihood that a student will engage in problem behaviors. For example, strong positive attachment to school and community reduces the risks. Each year our school district receives funding through the Federal Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Grant. The funds are to be used to support our local anti- drug and alcohol school programs. Programs such as, On Applebee Pond, Stand Tall, TATU, (Teenagers Against Tobacco Use), Peer Helpers and the Student Assistance Program are supported through this grant. Planning for these programs is based in large part upon the needs of our schools, families and communities. In order to best determine what those needs are we rely on the results received from the PA Youth Survey. This needs assessment tool offers the most comprehensive information of any survey instrument on the market today, because it contains more questions related to risk and protective factors. The more we know, the better able we are able to formulate strategies for positive youth development in our schools, families and communities. We will be administering the PA Youth Survey to all of our 10th and 12th grade students on Friday, November 6, 2009. The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete. All student surveys are completed online. These surveys are anonymous and are kept strictly confidential. All results are analyzed and presented at the group level. We are scheduled to receive the results sometime next spring. The results will be analyzed and used in the preparation of the grant for 2010-2011 school year. You may review the survey by contacting Stephanie Keebler, High School Principal at 814-827-2715 Ext. 1410. Students received the letter Friday, October 30th and need to return the form if they choose to "opt out" by Wednesday, November 4th, 2009.
