Education Funding Initiatives
Providing a quality education for all students is a shared responsibility. Currently two efforts are underway in PA to continue focusing on this shared responsibility.

From a state perspective, the PA Basic Education Funding Commission, co-chaired by Senator Pat Brown and Representative Mike Vereb, is holding hearings around the state to hear the public’s views on education funding.

In addition, the William Penn Foundation, working in concert with other 40 organizations, has organized the “Campaign for Fair Education Funding” to provide grass roots support for developing a funding formula in PA.

Research from these two initiatives has revealed that Pennsylvania is one among only three states (Delaware, North Carolina) that doesn’t have a funding formula for supporting education. Additionally, PA ranks 43rd out of 50 states in the state’s share of total costs of its pre-K through 12th grade educational system. (Maryland 41%; Ohio 43,2%; Delaware 58.6%; West Virginia 55.8% and PA 34.5%)

As educational leaders we know the importance of a state funding formula that is equitable, adequate, predictable and accountable to prepare our students to compete in a global society. We encourage everyone to follow these two education funding initiatives at http://basiceducationfundingcommission.pasenategop.com/ and http://fairfundingpa.org.
