THS STUDENTS ATTEND MODEL UN
The conference began Friday evening with the opening session at Gannon’s Hammermill Center. Delegates then attended various working sessions representing research conducted before the conference on both Friday and Saturday. The topics selected for discussion for this year’s Model UN were combatting the threat of new challenges in armed conflicts, including the control of lethal autonomous weapons and regulation of private security companies; encouraging international cooperation in the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of economic fraud and identity-related crime; working towards universal principles for assistance and protection of international undocumented migrants; strengthening the ability of all countries to deal with the impacts of climate change; and addressing the dangers of public health outbreaks on women and children. Within individual topic sessions, delegates were encouraged to participate in the discussion representing the position of their assigned country.  Each session developed a resolution that was presented to the entire delegation for a vote at the closing session.

Our delegation was also part of the Historical Security Council which debated issues that took place in 1979.

While attending the Model UN conference students are judged by the Chairman of each session based on professionalism, confidence, ability to work with others, and a variety of other aspects that may qualify them for a Best Delegate Award. Titusville was fortunate enough to have one skilled student receive this award. Erik Hipple, one of the THS delegates representing the Czech Republic in strengthening the ability of all countries to deal with the impacts of climate change session, was honored with one of the few Best Delegate Awards that were presented at the closing session.
