The Crawford Health Improvement Coalition (CHIC) announces the Meadville premiere of the film Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic, with a special screening on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at The Movies in Meadville.
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) may be the most widespread, misunderstood and potentially dangerous epidemic that many people know little about. Someone You Love reveals just how dangerous this virus can be, causing six different types of cancers in both men and women. Narrated by Vanessa Williams, this poignant documentary follows five brave women’s stories who are afflicted by HPV and cervical cancer, the film also interviews some of the world’s top experts on the most common sexually transmitted infection in humans: HPV.
Eighty percent of all people under 50 years of age will have a strain of the virus at some point in their lives and most will not even realize they have it. Cervical cancer is almost exclusively caused by HPV and it is the 2nd leading cancer in women. Worldwide, cervical cancer kills over 250,000 women every year.
The screening of Someone You Love is part of a countywide effort to raise community awareness and provide education about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and a vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, as well as, anal, throat, penile, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. Data from the Centers for Disease Control’s National Program of Cancer Registries between 2008 and 2012 show Crawford County has the second highest incidence rate of cervical cancer in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia County.
The event is free of charge as part of an AMA Healthy Living Grant Program from the AMA Foundation awarded to CHIC earlier this year to fund PROTECT Against HPV Project 2016. The event includes free popcorn during the show as well as a Question and Answer portion directly after the screening where healthcare professionals will be on hand to answer questions about the HPV Vaccine. CHIC hopes this moving film will motivate parents and guardians to have their children immunized. HPV Vaccine is cancer prevention.
