Special Education

We believe all kids can succeed!

We are honored to work with you and your children. We believe that collaboration between the home and school is essential to providing diverse supports and services to meet their individual learning needs. At TASD, we work with families to create Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to meet the special needs of their children.

Your child may be eligible for special education services if he/she

• has a physical, sensory, mental or emotional disability; or
• has a need for special education as determined by an evaluation.

To fully meet the definition (and eligibility for special education and related services) as a “child with a disability,” the child’s educational performance must be adversely affected due to the disability and show a need for services.

Determining Services

Under Pennsylvania and federal law, a child with a disability has a right to special education and related services that are provided

• at public expense;
• under public supervision and direction; and
• without charge to preschool (ages 3–5), elementary, or secondary school students;

in conformity with an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

This means that students with disabilities who need special education must receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE).

Your child could receive the following services at school by participating in the special education program:

• Special transportation
• Physical or occupational therapy
• Other services that help or support your child as your child grows and learns
